About the Brabham BT42:

After two poor seasons, Gordon Murray's innovative “triangular design “Brabham BT42 marked the start of Brabham's revival in F1. Despite if Carlos Reutemann only had two podium finishes, the team mood was now upbeat.
Gordon Murray took over Brabham design office, and starts BT42 project from scratch.
To improve top speed, BT42 he used a triangular section monocoque, sidepods containing one fuel cell each , and a third cell between the driver and engine.
He revived the 'lobster-claw' at front radiators, using triangular housings with a chisel nose in between. The car had a short wheelbase and a low centre of gravity, BT37 deformable structure concept was integrated to design.
Carlos Reutemann and Wilson Fittipaldi were both kept as a drivers, while Graham Hill left to start his own team . John Watson was the designated driver for the BT42/1 debut at the Race of Champions, but a serious accident left him out of racings for 4 months .

Although BT42 did not achieve significant results , the new design proved to be very promising. McLaren M23, Lotus 72 and Tyrrell 006 were 1973 leading cars but the BT42 was not far behind. Reutemann qualified fifth in Sweden and finished fourth; finished third in France; qualified fifth at Zandvoort; finished fourth in Germany; qualified fifth in Austria and finished fourth; qualified fourth in Canada; qualified second at Watkins Glen and finished third.
After the end of the 1973 season , the new Brabham BT44 was ready to debut in 1974, so three of the four surviving BT42 were sold off: John Watson will drive BT42/2 for team Hexagon of Highgate and Scuderia Finotto acquiring BT42/5 and BT42/6 for hire deals . The remaining car, BT42/3, was retained as a spare and hire deals. Later this unit was handed over to Martini as a show car. One of them has been completely rebuilt to BT44 specification for historic racing, and a second has BT44 bodywork. These two, plus one standard-specification BT42 appeared at the Monaco Historics in 2008, while the fourth is a recent Concours winner.
